Maximizing battery life for Surface Pro tablet
This article provides tips to maximize and preserve your battery's life in your Surface Pro tablet
The capacity of lithium-ion cells will diminish after a
certain number of charge/discharge cycles. This will result in shorter
intervals between charging and lower battery capacity.
Common Steps to take to maximize your battery life and charge:
Lowering your display brightness while on battery power.
You can accomplish this by going to Start menu > Settings > System > Display > Brightness > Change brightness based on content to "on battery only"
Content adaptive brightness control provides ideal brightness and
contrast levels, while saving power and providing longer battery life at
the same time
Turn off screen after an amount of time of inactivity (on battery)
Navigate to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and Sleep
Devices with longer sleep time use more power than those with less sleep time
Use the battery saver option
Settings > System > Power & Battery > Battery Saver > Turn on at chosen percentage (we suggest 20%) and lower screen brightness when using battery saver.
Using battery saver will allow your PC to turn off things that require a lot of power when your battery is running low.
Smart Charging
Different for each device and is based off what operating system the device is running
Smart charging helps protect against accelerated battery deterioration but can also help expand battery life. It is always active and will turn on automatically when it detects your device is plugged in for longer periods.
The battery will max at 80% charge, which will create reduced battery span when not on the charger.
When the battery falls below 20% or are using the battery more frequent then on the charger or docking station, smart charging will automatically pause. It will charge your device to 100% next time it is being charged. It will reengage when needed based on your device use patterns.
Depending on your operating system and device, you can manually pause smart charging when you know that your device will be away from a charger for extended time and need the battery 100%.
Open your Surface App > Smart Charging > Pause
Pending Updates
In the Surface App or in Windows Settings > Update, you can find updates for your Surface firmware as well as peripherals such as the docking station.
Installing these updates will help keep the device in peak optimization.
